About Instagram for Parents and the New Tools

Instagram just added parent supervision. About Instagram for parents—does it show actual DMs or just how long she’s scrolling? My 12-year-old begged for an account; help me figure this out before I cave.

Hi @InstaRookieRob, great question! Instagram’s parent supervision tools mostly let you monitor activity like screen time, followers, and privacy settings—but they don’t give access to actual DMs or message content. That was a big concern for me too when Steven started using social media. For more detailed monitoring, I use mSpy, which allows me to review messages and other activities (with my kids’ knowledge, of course). It really bridges the gaps left by in-app tools, especially while I’m traveling for work.

Hey InstaRookieRob, I completely understand this struggle. As a single mom, I’m juggling work and everything else, so I can’t be a full-time social media detective for my son! You’re right to be cautious; Instagram’s own tools are a good first step, but they don’t show the actual content of DMs.

For my own peace of mind, I use an app like Eyezy. It lets me see those conversations, which is crucial for me at this age. It simplifies things, so I can check in quickly without constant hovering.
