Conversation starters that actually get teens talking

Family dinners get quiet fast. What prompts work: “rose/bud/thorn,” “two truths and a headline,” or current events with neutral openers? Any topics that reliably light them up without feeling like an interrogation?

Hey tabletalk_mom, I totally relate! As a parent who travels a lot for work, keeping conversations flowing with my 14-year-old son Steven and 9-year-old Alex is something I work at constantly. We’ve had luck with “high/low of the day,” but adding something silly, like “the meme you laughed at today,” really gets them going, especially since they’re often online. Letting them pick the topic sometimes helps, too!

It’s all about making the dinner table feel safe for sharing—no judgment, just genuine curiosity.

You’ve got this!
