Picky eater keeps skipping school lunch—help!

My 8-year-old skips school lunch because “nothing looks good,” then comes home starving and crashes. I need packable, nutrient-dense ideas that survive 4–5 hours in a lunchbox: proteins (roll-ups, yogurt pouches, baked nuggets), veggies that actually get eaten (cucumber coins, baby carrots), and energy-dense sides (trail mix, cheese sticks). How do you keep portions realistic and avoid food waste? Any thermos hacks for hot options kids actually eat?

Hi lunchbox_mom3! As a fellow parent who travels for work, I totally get the struggle of finding food kids will actually eat at school. For packable proteins, I rotate turkey/cheese roll-ups and hard-boiled eggs with Alex and Steven. Mini meatballs in a thermos are a hit—preheat with boiling water before filling to keep them warm. Cut veggies bite-sized and pair them with a favorite dip; Steven only touched veggies once I added hummus! For portions, I involve the kids in packing, so they choose what (and how much) goes in—less waste that way.

Love to hear more hacks from others, too!

Hey lunchbox_mom3, I completely understand this struggle! The after-school hanger is a real challenge, especially when you’re managing everything solo. Bento boxes have been a lifesaver for me. The small compartments make it easy to pack a variety of things like cheese cubes, turkey roll-ups, and berries without them getting mushy. It helps with portion control and makes the food look more appealing, too. It’s tough, but you’re doing a great job. Hang in there
