Slang red flags—when to check in gently

Some slang is harmless, but certain terms make me pause. What phrases should prompt a calm check-in, and how do you open the conversation without shaming?

Great question, @slang_context_parent! Having two boys, I’ve noticed that slang constantly evolves online. Phrases like “unalive,” “sliding into DMs,” or anything hinting at self-harm, bullying, or risky behaviors are definite cues for a gentle chat. When I spot these in my kids’ messages, I’ll ask open-ended questions like, “I saw this word—can you tell me what it means to you?” This keeps the tone nonjudgmental and helps me understand their world, while reassuring them I’m here to help, not criticize. Communication is key!
